FAGUN THAKRAR

Fagun Thakrar is a filmmaker whose path to this story began in medicine. Trained at University College London, where she specialized in neuroscience, she holds five degrees — among them a Master’s in Classical Acting from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and an MBA from the University of Cambridge. Her screen career spans Hollywood and international cinema alongside Academy Award winners; she was honored on BAFTA’s Newcomers Program and named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2023.

As Founder and CEO of The Purpose Movie Studio, she creates cinema dedicated to positive impact worldwide. She comes to this film independent of any lab or company — able to follow the science with a physician’s understanding, and to follow it honestly. And she carries, quietly, her own version of the film’s question: a mind the world had never quite met, finally met.

Director’s Statement

We are living in the moment that shapes the AI era. Not the moment it arrives — it is already here — but the moment humanity decides what it becomes, and what we become alongside it. Intelligence beyond our own is coming in our lifetime; the people building it say so themselves. How we meet it is being decided right now — and stories are how that gets decided.

So far, fear is writing the story. Almost everything the world hears about AI arrives wrapped in dread, and I understand why. But fear is not a place to live — and it is not the whole story. I believe we meet this era far better with clear eyes and hope, and I am making this film to show the side almost no one is telling.

My reason is personal. My mind has always worked differently than the world expected, and I spent years finding other ways in. Then machines arrived that met my mind exactly as it works. I stood on a hill above Silicon Valley when I understood what that meant, and I cried. Afterwards I began noticing it everywhere — minds the world had never quite met, quietly being given their own superpowers. These stories are all around us. I wanted to find out how far they go.

So this film goes inside — to the people building what comes next — to ask what happens to work, to meaning, to what makes us human when intelligence surpasses us. It does not look away from the dangers; the hardest questions belong in the film, asked to the people best able to answer them. I trained in medicine and neuroscience before I became a filmmaker, and I come to these rooms independent of any lab or company. I can follow the science; my job is to follow it honestly.

This is the time to shape the AI era — and this film is my part in shaping it. I hope it shows what we might become, and gives people a reason to look forward.
